This opening match of the former World Cup winners is already causing a great deal of excitement, as France now stand at the prospect of suffering another surprising result. In 2002 in Seoul, Senegal, who were strong underdogs, pulled off one of the tournament's greatest shocks by beating France 1-0 after Papa Bouba Diop had scored in the 30th minute; France, who were missing Zinedine Zidane due to injury, failed to score any goals and were knocked out in the group stage with not a single shot on target. Senegal went on to reach the quarter-finals.
The teams are currently playing one another at MetLife Stadium, which is near New York City, taking with them all the history that they share on the greatest stage in football.
"It's one of the toughest groups, if not the toughest," said France coach Didier Deschamps, who added: "They're a competitive national team. And I won't say anything different about Norway after their qualifying campaign. They're one of the very best European teams."
Deschamps is in the position of leading what is usually expected to be his final major tournament in his capacity as France's manager, and he wants to win a second World Cup title to join the one that he won in 2018 — a feat which would make him one of only three men in history to have won the World Cup both as a player and as a manager, alongside Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer.
At the same time, Senegal are taking part in the tournament as AFCON champions, having secured victory in the final against Morocco 1-0 in Rabat in January 2026. The Lions of Teranga are full of confidence, and Sadio Mané, who was unfairly kept out of the 2022 World Cup because of an injury, is determined to make his mark at the most important event of the tournament.

Tactical Breakdown
France employ a fluid 4-2-3-1 formation, which, when they are in possession, effectively turns into a 4-3-3 because one of the attacking midfielders moves between the lines. Mbappé is able to move centrally, swap places with Dembélé and Doué, and make use of the space behind the defence. Tchouaméni stays deep as the central pivot, which allows Rabiot to advance. France's central midfield team will aim to control the ball and set the pace from the very first minute.
Deschamps isn't able to field all his attackers at the same time, but the players available from the substitute bench provide a huge amount of additional attacking strength when playing in the late summer in New Jersey.
Under Pape Thiaw, Senegal arranged themselves in a well-disciplined 4-3-3 formation, relying on solid defence and quick counter-attacks. Koulibaly organizes the well-structured back four, and the essential part of Senegal's strategy will be to break down France's midfield rhythm — Idrissa Gana Gueye and Lamine Camara are well suited to achieve this — before sending Mané and Sarr forward, thus stretching France's full-backs.
Key Battles
The main matchup is Kylian Mbappé and Kalidou Koulibaly. Mbappé is the tournament's top goalscoring threat and has never scored against Senegal in his career. Although Koulibaly is now in a veteran phase he still maintains a strong presence, and he will have to draw upon all of his experience to contain the Real Madrid striker. The player who blinks first is likely to determine the outcome of this game.
Sadio Mané and Jules Koundé. Although Mané is now 34 and can no longer be described as the electric Premier League player he once was, the forward with Al-Nassr is still extremely dangerous during the World Cup—having missed the previous one in 2022. Koundé is one of Europe's top right-backs, but it is Mané's unpredictability and his intelligence when the ball is not with him that make this matchup so interesting.
The midfield battle is taking place between Idrissa Gana Gueye and Aurélien Tchouaméni; Gueye has to keep up constant pressure and be good at intercepting if he is to disrupt France's build-up play, whereas Tchouaméni will try to control the tempo of the game. The side that wins this contest in the middle of the field will achieve a major advantage.
Head-to-Head
| # | Year | Competition | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2002 | FIFA World Cup (Group) | Senegal 1–0 France |
This marks their second competitive encounter altogether; France would like to compose a completely different script.
Fan Atmosphere & Venue
MetLife Stadium — capacity approximately 82,500 — sits just outside New York City and is one of the showpiece venues of the 2026 tournament. The French diaspora in New York and New Jersey is sizeable, and Les Bleus are expected to enjoy a strong crowd presence. Senegalese fans, however, faced reported travel restrictions tied to US immigration policy, meaning the Lions' support in the stands may be thinner than on home turf.
As France is overwhelming favourites, ranked among the top contenders to lift the trophy. Their attack — Mbappé, Dembélé, Olise, Doué — is arguably the most potent unit in the tournament. Senegal, however, have the tactical structure, defensive discipline, and individual quality to make this a very uncomfortable opening 90 minutes.
Do not rule out Senegal doing it again.
